Detox 101

As a Detox Specialist, I love talking about… you guessed it… DETOXING! I am most definitely a seasonal detoxer and drink daily juices to cleanse the body. Sometimes they have tons of greens and sometimes I like to keep things sweet. Either way, I love to impress my cells with vital nutrients and minerals from food.

I am about to launch my Fall Detox in a few short weeks and needed to brush up on detoxification from one of the greatest, Dr. Frank Lipman.

Here’s what I learned from his most recent article…I’ve paraphrased.

Detox means….?

Detoxification is what your body does naturally to neutralize, transform or get rid of unwanted materials or toxins.

It is about improving and optimizing the function of your body’s own detoxification systems. This is done by decreasing the amount of toxins we put into our bodies while at the same time supporting our body’s detoxification and elimination systems with the nutrients it needs to function properly.

The detoxification system is a key component of our body’s functioning.

We need hundreds of enzymes, vitamins and other molecules to help rid the body of unwanted waste products and chemicals.

Although the bulk of the work is done by the liver and the intestinal tract, the kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system and skin are all involved in this complex detoxification system.

The purpose of a detoxification program is primarily to support these organs of elimination so that toxins present in the body can be metabolized and excreted.

Why is detoxing recommended?

Detoxing helps our bodies cope with the onslaught of toxins and stress which are an unavoidable part of modern day life.

Externally, our exposure to chemicals in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the personal care products we put on our skin and household products is greater than ever.

Our bodies are constantly neutralizing and eliminating all these toxins, that is, detoxing.

If and when our own detoxification systems (predominantly the liver and the gut) become overloaded and do not function properly, toxins get stored in various tissues in the body, including fatty tissue.

Many of these external toxins or synthetic molecules are chemically similar to biologically active substances in our bodies and therefore easily interfere with our cell’s normal activities. For example:

  • Some interfere with our hormones!
  • Some disable the immune system!
  • Some cause overstimulation of certain enzymes, others block their activity!

I became a Detox Specialist to help women lose weight, ditch adrenal fatigue (aka restore the body’s natural filtering system) and to support postnatal mama’s develop a new normal.
